Conservation 1962-1979 When Vasa was raised in 1961, no one had ever conserved such a large wooden structure before. This required thinking on a grander scale than any previously conserved object or, for that matter, any object conserved since. The Hull As the hull was made up of more than 700 cubic meters of wood, weighing ca. 1500 tonnes when wet, this required thinking on a grander scale than any previously conserved object or, for that matter, any object conserved since. The objects more than 40,000 objects were found with Vasa. These were stored in water tanks until conserved at the purpose-built conservation laboratory at Beckholmen. The sails Conservation of Vasa’s sails took over a decade to complete. Today at the museum, we have the remains of 650 square meters of sails, one of them displayd in the ship hall.
