There are about 46,000 objects in the Vasa Museum collections, both loose objects and those mounted on the ship. Only 2,000 of these are on exhibit. Most of the collection is housed in the museum stores, of which there are two. One is located within the pontoon construction underneath the ship. The other is in Tumba in southern Stockholm, in large warehouses shared by other Stockhom museums for the same purpose.
The stores have a stable climate which is regulated by a climate system to meet the individual needs of the objects. There are currently about 26,000 objects in the stores at the Vasa Museum, which are currently being inventoried. Some finds are being transferred to the Tumba stores in order to create better space for all the objects in the collection.
Tumba now holds about 3,000 objects. Many of these are large and heavy, and took up much space in the museum, for example, deck planks from the hold of the ship. The Tumba stores are relatively new, having been in use since 2001. These stores are situated some distance from the museum and since the objects do not fare well during long transport, we prefer that they be fully documented before they are moved and once there are not moved again.
Our aim is to have all types of finds connected to the ship represented at the museum, in exhibits or in the stores, but this does not require all objects to be there. If, for example, an object group consists of 62 gun carriages, not all of them need to be kept at the museum. A representative sample can be kept at the museum, while the rest can be moved to Tumba.
The stores in the Vasa Museum may be visited by appointment.
