CONVERSATIONS WITH A SHIPWRECK is an interactive digital exhibition with a haunting, multimedia meditation on Vasa, created in word and image by fiction writer and memoirist Joan Wickersham and photographer Adam Davies. Through presentations of poems and large-format photographs, with short durational video and audio, this digital art and literary exhibition responds to Vasa that was both destroyed and preserved by catastrophe. The exhibition explores themes of memory and oblivion, technological triumph and fiasco, permanence and impermanence, mortality and time.

🇸🇪#tbt 1 april 1961

Vasa's salvage anniversary starts with a 60-year-old televised April Fool's joke on Maundy Thursday!
On the salvage pontoon at Stockholm harbour, Olle Björklund interviews the diver Per Edvin Fälting about Vasa finds, 23 days before the big salvage of the hull. Olle Björklund is dressed in a diving suit, goes down, comes up. From a salvaged sailor´s coffin, a beer bottle, corkscrew, sea-rolled cheese, pain riche, drink jug and butter jar are taken out. Everything is commented on by "antiquarian Nils Lindberg" (Yngve Gamlin). This feature is a joke, but both butter and spirits were found and salvaged and are still in the Vasa Museum today.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be aboard Vasa?!

In the exhibition Life on board you get to know what it was like to be on a war ship like Vasa and even experience a replica of Vasa’s upper gun deck.

"Most museums are great based on their collection. But the Vasa Museum is great because of the experience of visiting it. You have to go and see it for yourself to appreciate it."

Today we remember Prof. George F. Bass, one of the pioneers of modern maritime archaeology, who passed away on March 2 at the age of 88. While Vasa was being prepared for raising in 1960, he led a successful archaeological excavation underwater of a Bronze Age (12th century BC) merchant ship at Cape Gelidonya, Turkey. In the following years, he excavated a series of wrecks in Turkey, including the Yassιada Byzantine ship (7th century), the Serçe Limanι “Glass Wreck” (11th century), and the Bronze Age wreck at Uluburun (13th century BC), which proved to be one of the most spectacular sites of its era, on land or underwater. His work rewrote the conventional interpretations of maritime trade in the ancient and medieval Mediterranean. Although others had attempted to excavate shipwrecks and other sites underwater, he and his team developed many of the techniques that became standards, especially in the excavation of ancient ships in the Mediterranean, and gave the new field academic credibility.

In 1972, he founded the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, an independent research institute that today carries out archaeological projects around the world. Since 1976 it has been headquartered at Texas A&M University, where he established the Nautical Archaeology Program, one of the first graduate academic programs to specialize in maritime archaeology. Its graduates are in leading positions around the world (including the Director of Research at the Vasa Museum). He worked with pioneers in other countries, such as Carl Olof Cederlund in Sweden, to establish international standards for maritime archaeology and was a powerful spokesman for archaeology and progressive heritage management in the fight against looting and destruction of submerged cultural heritage.
