"Most museums are great based on their collection. But the Vasa Museum is great because of the experience of visiting it. You have to go and see it for yourself to appreciate it."

Today we remember Prof. George F. Bass, one of the pioneers of modern maritime archaeology, who passed away on March 2 at the age of 88. While Vasa was being prepared for raising in 1960, he led a successful archaeological excavation underwater of a Bronze Age (12th century BC) merchant ship at Cape Gelidonya, Turkey. In the following years, he excavated a series of wrecks in Turkey, including the Yassιada Byzantine ship (7th century), the Serçe Limanι “Glass Wreck” (11th century), and the Bronze Age wreck at Uluburun (13th century BC), which proved to be one of the most spectacular sites of its era, on land or underwater. His work rewrote the conventional interpretations of maritime trade in the ancient and medieval Mediterranean. Although others had attempted to excavate shipwrecks and other sites underwater, he and his team developed many of the techniques that became standards, especially in the excavation of ancient ships in the Mediterranean, and gave the new field academic credibility.

In 1972, he founded the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, an independent research institute that today carries out archaeological projects around the world. Since 1976 it has been headquartered at Texas A&M University, where he established the Nautical Archaeology Program, one of the first graduate academic programs to specialize in maritime archaeology. Its graduates are in leading positions around the world (including the Director of Research at the Vasa Museum). He worked with pioneers in other countries, such as Carl Olof Cederlund in Sweden, to establish international standards for maritime archaeology and was a powerful spokesman for archaeology and progressive heritage management in the fight against looting and destruction of submerged cultural heritage.

How do schools experience the Vasa during the pandemic? Digital of course! They get to see the ship from different angles, and also a copy of inside the ship: Here we meet Inger, having a quite cozy time but telling us all about the not so cozy life onboard a warship in the 17th century.

Vasamuseets pedagoger träffar skolor från hela Sverige under pandemin. Digitalt.

🇸🇪 Dimmigt idag i Stockholm.

🇬🇧🇺🇸 Foggy today in Stockholm. Vasa is resting in her final harbour iat her tailor-made museum on Djurgården in Stockholm. The museum is built over an old dry dock and the building is 33 metres tall. Three symbolic steel masts rise above the roof, as tall as Vasa’s original masts would have been. Can you see them?

🇬🇧🇺🇸 We have some objects in our collections which we cannot identify. This little animal figure is carved in antler, probably from a reindeer, standing on a rectangular base with a hole through its length. On one end is a ferrule of metal, probably brass. It is 6 cm long, 3 cm high and 1 cm thick at the base.

The object, find number 05120, was found on the upper gundeck. This deck is littered with a number of finds which landed on the ship in the years after it sank, objects which fell off passing boats or were washed out into the harbour from the land. We thus cannot be sure that this artefact sank with Vasa in 1628 or if it came to rest on the ship sometime in the following 333 years.

We also do not know what it is or how it was used. Was it part of the stem of a pipe? The handle to a small box? Part of a clock case?

💖💕💘💞💘💓💘💗💕💖

💘It is Valentine's Day on Sunday and we wanted to show you some underwater love from Vasa's salvage.💓

The diver Per Edvin Fälting drew figures on a wooden board that sat on the wall inside the house on the diving raft. The mermaid courted by a diver are two of the characters.
